A New Way to Check Your Heart with Just a Smartphone

A New Way to Check Your Heart with Just a Smartphone

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Scientists at Mississippi State University have discovered an inexpensive way to detect heart disease.

What is it?
Imagine using your phone to take a simple video of your chest, and that video can help doctors figure out if your heart is healthy. This invention is a special system that looks at tiny vibrations in your chest and uses that information to detect possible heart problems.

Why is it important?
Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. and the world. But if doctors catch heart problems early, they can help prevent serious issues and even save lives. Right now, the tools to check your heart are expensive, need special equipment, or require you to go to a hospital. This invention patented by Dr. Amirtahà Taebi makes it easier, cheaper, and more convenient to monitor your heart.

How does it work?
This system doesn’t need wires, needles, or fancy equipment. Instead, it uses a special technology that zooms in on tiny movements in your chest. All you need is a smartphone or camera to record a video of your chest. The system then studies the video to find signs of unusual heart activity. This method focuses on how your heart moves, not just its electrical signals like other tools do.

Dr. Taebi works with graduate students to perfect the seismocardiography technology.

Why is it better?

  • Affordable: It costs less than many other heart-checking tools.
  • Easy to Use: You can do it at home without visiting a doctor.
  • Non-invasive: It doesn’t require touching your body.

Where can it be used?
This system works in many places:

  • At home for everyday use.
  • In hospitals or doctor’s offices.
  • For athletes during sports training.
  • For people of all ages, from babies to seniors.

What makes it special?
Most heart monitors look at the heart’s electrical signals, like using an ECG. This invention focuses on the heart’s movements, which can make it more accurate and helpful. It’s a simple, low-cost way for anyone to keep an eye on their heart health, no matter where they are.
